Double glazing

Double glazing specified for the room and opening

Insulated glass units can improve comfort and reduce outside noise, but the frame, glass make-up and installation must be considered together.

Project planning

What double glazing changes

A double-glazed unit uses two panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer. The air space changes how heat and sound pass through the opening compared with a single pane.

The benefit depends on more than the glass alone. Frame system, pane make-up, seals, opening type, wall condition and the rest of the building all affect the result. That is why ODG prices double glazing by opening and confirms the proposed specification in writing.

Double glazing is often considered for exposed bedrooms, living areas, guest rooms and spaces affected by winter cold, outside noise or recurring surface condensation. It does not replace sensible ventilation or address an unrelated building moisture problem.

What to consider

Scope the work before fabrication

Comfort

The sealed air space reduces heat transfer through the glass. In practice, the comfort improvement is most noticeable when the glazing forms a meaningful part of the room envelope and the frames and seals are in good condition.

Outside noise

Two panes and a sealed cavity can reduce outside sound, but results depend on pane thickness, spacing, frame seals and other sound paths such as roofs, vents and doors. Tell us the noise source so the glass discussion starts in the right place.

Condensation

Warmer interior glass surfaces can reduce condensation on the glass. Indoor humidity and ventilation still matter, so persistent moisture should be considered as part of the whole room rather than treated as a glass-only issue.

Common questions

Double glazing FAQs

Can double glazing be fitted into every existing frame?
Not always. The frame and glazing pocket must be suitable for the insulated glass unit. Existing openings need to be assessed before a specification is confirmed.
Will double glazing stop all outside noise?
No. It can reduce outside sound, but the result depends on the glass make-up, seals and other sound paths through the building.
Can I include double glazing only in selected rooms?
Yes. Because openings are itemised, you can ask for selected rooms or compare single- and double-glazed options where appropriate.
